The UAB East Base Hospital and Bed Tower was a $14.7 million expansion of University Hospital which was completed in 1979 on the site of the former University Ambulatory Center.

The building was part of the "New U" expansion which also included the Spain Heart Bed Tower, Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium, and Lurleen B. Wallace Tower. The Spain Heart Bed Tower was Phase II of the Alabama Heart Hospital complex (The Quarterback Tower was designated as Phase I of the Alabama Heart Hospital complex). Three additional floors were added to the Spain Heart Bed Tower during the mid-1980's.
