The Alabama Southern Railroad (ABS) is an 85-mile long private railroad connecting Norfolk-Southern Railroad in Tuscaloosa and CSX in Birmingham to the Kansas City Southern in Columbus, Mississippi.
The line began operating as a division of the Kansas City Southern on November 20, 2005 and was acquired by the Pittsburgh, Kansas-based Watco Companies in 2006.
In 2023 the railroad announced that it would invest $9.8 million to construct a second yard at the Tuscaloosa County Airport Industrial Park with access to U.S. Highway 82. The project was supported with $535,125 in tax abatements approved by the Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority.
