The Birmingham Art and Cultural Center was a planned organization to promote arts and culture in Birmingham as a way to combat "brain drain" of college graduates to larger cities. It was founded in 1974 by Roslyn Levene.
In its early days, the organizers hoped to secure funding for the Crafts, Arts, Movies & Music series. As a publicity stunt, the center recruited Larry Brooks to ride around the city on horseback, dressed in medieval armor. Andy Stewart lent his palomino "Golden Playboy" for Brooks to ride.
