Originally a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church in the United States (a predecessor to the present Presbyterian Church (USA)), Briarwood was among some 250 PCUS congregations that became charter members of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) in December 1973. Barker oversaw the foundation of Briarwood Christian School, Birmingham Theological Seminary, Campus Outreach, Briarwood Ballet, as well as Camp Briarwood and ministries to business and medical professionals.

  • In 1988, the church moved to the Acton Road property.
  • In 1998, the church started broadcasting on WLJR radio.
  • In 1999, Frank Barker retired after serving as the senior pastor for 40 years, and was succeeded by the Rev. Dr. Harry L. Reeder III.

  • In 2023, Harry Reader died in a traffic accident. In December of that year, Rev. Dan Doriani, a professor of biblical and systematic theology at Covenant Theological Seminary, began serving as interim pastor.
