A 1960 advertisement for the Charcoal Steak House

The Charcoal Steak House was a restaurant located at 2223 4th Avenue North, opposite the Birmingham News Building in downtown Birmingham. The restaurant, owned by Frank Merrill, opened in 1934 and celebrated its sixth anniversary in 1940 with a special dinner in the newly opened "Blue Room". Diners were given special gifts (a rose for each lady and a cigar for each gentleman).

In addition to steaks, fried chicken and rotating lunch specials, the restaurant served "all popular beers" as well as Superior Ice Cream and Golden Flake products.
