Stiles began his career as an educator in 1983, teaching history at Norcross High School in Gwinnett County, Georgia. He was promoted to assistant principal in that system, and then became the principal of Shiloh High School in 1993.

In 1996 Stiles was recruited to Mountain Brook from Georgia by superintendent Charles Mason. After leaving the system in 2007, Stiles took a job with Morgan Keegan, but soon later was hired as superintendent of the newly-created Saraland City Schools district in Mobile County.
