Everett Wess
Everett W. Wess (born c. 1961) is a criminal defense attorney and managing partner in The Wess Law Firm in Irondale.
Wess graduated from Moss Point High School in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He earned his bachelor of science in computer science and mathematics and a masters in business administration at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville. He completed his juris doctorate at the Birmingham School of Law and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 2000.
In 2009 Wess attempted unsuccessfully to introduce motions in the Roebuck Springs-South Roebuck Neighborhood Association calling for the removal of neighborhood president Richard Rutledge.
From October 2011 to September 2012, Wess served as lead attorney in the criminal defense of Harvey Updyke, the man who pleaded guilty in March 2013 to poisoning the oak trees at Auburn's landmark Toomer's Corner. Wess withdrew from the case due to hardship.
Wess unsuccessfully challenged Birmingham City Council District 2 incumbent Kim Rafferty in the 2013 Birmingham municipal election. He finished fifth in the six-way race. In the 2014 election, Wess ran against Martin Weinberg in the Democratic primary for Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge, Place 3. The winner challenges incumbent Bill Cole in the general election.
