The Jefferson County Animal Shelter , currently operating as the Greater Birmingham Humane Society's Animal Care and Control building, is a facility located at 6227 5th Avenue North, near Forest Hill Cemetery, the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, and I-59 in Woodlawn.

The center is used as a collection point for stray animals impounded by the Humane Society under contract to Jefferson County, as well as for those picked up by Birmingham's own animal control officers, and those surrendered by the public. Veterinary care and spay/neuter services are provided at the facility on a contract basis. As required by city ordinance and as dictated by available resources, the society euthanizes many animals that are admitted to the facility.

The building is owned by the City of Birmingham and operated jointly with Jefferson County, formerly under contract to BJC Animal Control, and, since 2015 by the GBHS Animal Care & Control Division. The building has been in serious need of repairs, for which GBHS has solicited donations.
