Leticia Watkins

Leticia Watkins (born c. 1985 in Poughkeepsie, New York) is an assistant program director at UAB and director of children and youth for Sixth Avenue Baptist Church. She is also president of the Titusville Youth Sports Association.

Watkins grew up in coastal Virginia and earned her bachelor of science in biology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and worked as a pharmaceutical research scientist. She came to Birmingham to complete a master’s in medical science at UAB and while a student helped expand mentorship opportunities for undergraduates and scholarships for transfers from two-year colleges. She has been involved with UAB's "Integrating Computing Across the Curriculum" initiative and the Birmingham Coalition for Student Mental Health, and has been active in mentoring and literacy programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic she helped organize remote learning centers and meal distribution for public school students.

Watkins campaigned for the vacant District 6 seat on the Birmingham Board of Education in the 2021 Birmingham municipal election. As a candidate she pledged to work to increase parental involvement and expand opportunities for transitioning to college or careers.
