Revision as of 15:36, 2 March 2016

The 2016 statewide primary election were comprised of the following ballots:

  • The Democratic and Republican Party primaries was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 ("Super Tuesday"). The weather was clear and mild from morning to mid-afternoon, but storms swept through the Birmingham area in the early evening.
  • Democratic and Republican Party runoffs on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. There are no run-offs for presidential candidates, with each party awarding delegates to their respective national conventions based largely on the primary results. The Alabama Democratic Party has seven possible "superdelegates" who can vote as they choose regardless of the primary results. Of those seven, one, Redding Pitt, died just before the election. The Alabama Republican Party's three appointed delegates are pledged to the overall winner of the primary.

Overall voter turnout was slightly higher than expected, with 1,269,751 people, or 41.4% of the state's 3,066,732 eligible voters, casting ballots. Of those voting in the presidential primaries, 398,309 voted on the Democratic ballot while 867,235 voters marked Republican ballots.
