In 1874 Birmingham, England's Aston Villa Football Club was founded. Gold was discovered in South Dakota's Black Hills. Levi Strauss and his partner patented copper-riveted blue jeans. The Agra Canal opened in India. Notable births included those of William Somerset Maugham, Gertrude Stein, Honus Wagner, Harry Houdini, Robert Frost, Herbert Hoover, Charles Ives, and Winston Churchill. Deaths in 1874 included those of Siamese twins Chang and Eng and former President Millard Fillmore.
