The 1990 Iron Bowl was decided on December 1, returning the series to Legion Field. Alabama won 16-7.

The Eric Ramsey controversy was shaking the foundation of Auburn's program. Auburn slipped to 8-3-1 in a season that promised great things but ended in bitter disappointment. Meanwhile, the shift of power was taking place again. Alabama had lost the four previous Iron Bowls, but 1990 saw a new era for the Tide, with the arrival of head coach Gene Stallings. Stallings surrounded himself with several former Tide coaches and players and mended the separation caused by the Curry reign. Stallings gained immediate accreditation with the Tide's victory over the Tigers.
