8th Avenue West is an east-west street which continues Reverend Abraham Woods Jr Boulevard (8th Avenue North) from Center Street North in College Hills, westward to Bush Boulevard in Bush Hills. Another residential section picks up at 15th Street West and proceeds across the former Ensley city limit in line with Border Street, becoming 17th Street Ensley.

8th Avenue West forms the northern edge of the Graymont neighborhood and McLendon Park, home of Legion Field, and as the southern boundary of the Birmingham-Southern College campus. The section running alongside the college's original campus was called Hennington Avenue in Kelley's 1922 Map of Birmingham.
