It was established in 1975 and is located on the third floor of UAB's Lister Hill Library at 1700 University Boulevard. The curator is Stafanie Rookis.

HIghlights of the museum's collections include Chinese and European anatomical manikins, wax specimens sculpted by Joseph Towne of London and collected by Josiah Nott, medical specimens collected by William Boyd, a large collection of manuscripts on medical topics, various historical instruments, including an early 20th century iron lung, and archives relating to medical studies in Alabama.
