2008: Birmingham News editor Joseph Campbell died at 88.
2002: Birmingham Steeldogs 47 - Mobile Wizards 26 at the BJCC.
1994: Watterson Parkway opened to traffic in Trussville.
1991: "Photographs of Wales 1971-1978" by Rowland Scherman went on exhibit at Joe Bar as part of that year's Salute to the United Kingdom.
1963: "A Call for Unity", an open letter to Birmingham's African American citizens, was published in the Birmingham News.
1963: Martin Luther King, Jr was arrested for "parading without a permit" during a peaceful demonstration in support of civil rights for African Americans. While imprisoned he responded to "A Call for Unity" with his Letter from Birmingham Jail.
1937: Postcard collector and author J. D. Weeks was born in North Birmingham.
1887: The first lots in the new city of Bessemer were sold.
1882: Sloss Furnace No. 1 was blown in.
1874: U. S. Speaker of the House William B. Bankhead was born.
1865: Wilson's Raiders occupied Montgomery.
