1963: "A Call for Unity", an open letter to Birmingham's African American citizens, was published in the Birmingham News.
1963: Martin Luther King, Jr was arrested for "parading without a permit" during a peaceful demonstration in support of civil rights for African Americans. While imprisoned he responded to "A Call for Unity" with his Letter from Birmingham Jail.
1937: Postcard collector and author J. D. Weeks was born in North Birmingham.
1919: Radio newscaster Cy Bahakel was born in Birmingham.
1898: Labor and civil rights activist Hosea Hudson was born in Wilkes County, Georgia.
1887: The first lots in the new city of Bessemer were sold.
1882: Sloss Furnace No. 1 was blown in.
1874: U. S. Speaker of the House William Bankhead was born.
1865: Wilson's Raiders occupied Montgomery.
1834: Merchant and legislator Chambers McAdory was born in Jonesboro.
