Charles Hooper

Charles Sanford Hooper (born 1841 in Princeton, Kentucky; died January 25, 1905 in Birmingham) was an early Birmingham merchant.

Hooper's father, Enoch, moved his family to Kentucky from North Carolina. Young Charles enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and afterwards moved to Alabama to serve as superintendent for a plantation near Selma. While there he met Carrie Lee Harrell, daughter of Whitman Henry Harrell, of the pioneer family for which Harrell's Cross Roads was named.

In the early 1870s Hooper moved to Nabers Spring at the newly-founded city of Birmingham. He and M. M. Williams operated a drug business. He later moved to Blount Springs and operated a general merchandise store. It was in Blount County that he registered his marriage to Carrie Lee on February 15, 1876.

Hooper returned to Birmingham in 1898 and assisted J. W. Wallis at the Jefferson County Bankruptcy Court until his death.

The Hoopers had seven children.
