Deerfoot Parkway is a four-mile road serving as a connection between Trussville at Highway 11/Gadsden Highway and Clay at Old Springville Road. It was completed in 1994 with the opening of Exit 143 off I-59.

Deerfoot Parkway Bridge crosses the Cahaba River approximately ½ mile to the west of I-59. Soon after its construction the area below the bridge began attracting recreational four-wheelers. Erosion at the site has been blamed for introducing sediment into the Cahaba's headwaters.

The building of Clay-Chalkville High School and Clay-Chalkville Middle School established the new area as a center of new development. The large number of churches built on the parkway have earned it the nickname "Highway to Heaven".
