- 2002: President George W. Bush visited Birmingham. He gave a speech on national security at the Alys Stephens Center and attended a fundraiser for Governor Bob Riley at the BJCC.
- 2000: The Birmingham Steeldogs lost 61-50 to the Tennessee Valley Vipers in Huntsville.
- 1997: Compass Bank acquired Central Texas Bancorp of Waco, Texas.
- 1961: A paved quarter-mile track opened at the Birmingham International Raceway.
- 1952: Pro basketball player Allen Murphy was born in Birmingham
- 1820 Alabama's first Governor, William Wyatt Bibb died in office. Thomas Bibb, as President of the Senate, succeeded his brother as Governor.
