Evangel Presbytery
The Evangel Presbytery is the Central Alabama regional body of the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA). It is based in Birmingham. The PCA was organized in 1973 in a meeting at Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Cahaba Heights. It was initially named the National Presbyterian Church but soon changed to its current name.
As the previously existing United Presbyterian Church in the USA and the Presbyterian Church in the US moved toward reunion as the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 1983, congregations that did not wish to be part of the new denomination could join another group and some of both denominations in Birmingham joined the PCA. The Evangel Presbytery has also organized many new congregations.
