Sylvester Steele (died June 1897) was a partner in the mercantile firm of Vandegrift & Steele.

Steele was the son of Joshua Toliver Steele, who moved his parents and a family of twelve from North Georgia to St Clair County in 1855. Because Toliver Steele donated land for a railroad depot in 1870 and served as station agent, the community was named Steele in his honor.

Sylvester Steele and ____ Vandegrift operated a mercantile in Montevallo after the Civil War. Vandegrift left to open his own store in Ashville and Steele partnered with his younger brother, A. B. Vandegrift in a new Vandegrift & Steele store at 1925 2nd Avenue North in Birmingham.

Steele's daughter, Sophie had married the younger Vandegrift before the move.
