Savage's, December 2012

Savage's Bakery & Deli is located in the former Lowenbrau space in the basement of the Stevens Building at 2916 18th Street South in Homewood.

Savage's was originally opened by William Savage in the Highland Plaza shopping center on Highland Avenue in Southside in 1939.

In 1947, the bakery was one of the original tenants of Mountain Brook's Crestline Heights Shopping Center at 64 Church Street.

It moved to its current location in Homewood in the 1950s. Van Scott, who had previously worked at Waite's, purchased the business from Savage's widow in 1978 and learned how to operate it by working overnight shifts with long-time baker Tommy Duncan. He, in turn, taught the bakery's recipes to then-teenaged Ben Cook, who is now head baker.

His daughters Elizabeth and Margaret Scott have worked with the business in various roles. Code Jewell is the head cake decorator.

In June 2018 Savage's turned over part of its seating area to We Have Doughnuts, celebrating the partnership with a doughnut-topped layer cake. The doughnut shop ceased to operate as an independent business before the end of the summer.
